Dawne Torrance Nominated by Society for Support to Pregnant & Parenting Teens

Volunteer Dawne Torrence - Caught in the Act

Sitting in a darkened First Steps Nursery during quiet time Volunteer Dawne Torrance smoothly rocks back and forth cradling a sleeping infant.  With a flip of a light switch the room becomes an obstacle course as little feet move quickly to find a toy and place to play.  Child Care staff and other volunteers attend the active toddlers and infants as Dawne continues to rock and soothe her napping friend.  On an unusually warm Wednesday afternoon in November Dawne was ‘Caught in the Act’ of volunteering and took some time to speak with GPVSB about her work with the Society to Support Pregnant and Parenting Teens.

Over 3 years ago the semi retried Dawne noticed a posting on Facebook looking for Child Care Volunteers, wanting to support her community and being from a family of life-long volunteers, she applied to volunteer for the Society for Support for Pregnant & Parenting Teens.  After an extensive screening process and a detailed orientation, Dawne joined the child care team that currently consists of 12 volunteers and 2 staff members. The Society’s First Steps Nursery provides care for children from infancy to 35 months of age and is a free service offered to clients who attend the Bridge Network School & Pregnant and Parenting Teen programs.  Dawne helps at the nursery for 1-2 days a week and happily fills in for other volunteers on short notice, aside from comforting the kids she assist with cleaning the room, keeping the toys clean and organized, and will occasionally bring the staff coffee.  She also enjoys taking the little ones outside for a breath of fresh air.  The kids like spending time with Dawne as much as she does with them, Dawne adores watching them grow and learn, and according to Sacha Balaski, Volunteer Coordinator at Society for Support to Pregnant & Parenting Teens, “Dawne has the patience & kindness that is required when working with young children.” She also states “Dawne is a loyal and valuable volunteer, we could not provide the level of care to the children we do without volunteers like Dawne. Words cannot express how much we value and appreciate her.”  Dawne’s love and dedication to the children and nursery is quite evident as told by Child Care staff member Lisa Martens Childcare Educator, “last winter we had new clients in need of proper winter apparel for their baby, and Dawne went above and beyond by donating winter clothes to them.”  During the spring Dawne helps with the Society’s annual Playhouse Raffle selling tickets. When not volunteering with Pregnant and Parenting Teens Dawne spends her time gardening, quilting and has recently started volunteering with 10,000 Villages Canada.

The Grande Prairie Volunteer Services Bureau would like to thank Dawne for her hard work helping the staff and children at The Society for Pregnant & Parenting Teens First Steps Nursery and being ‘Caught in the Act’ of volunteering.
