Looking to gain experience in tutoring children and youth? Become a Frontier College tutor!
Frontier College has been at the forefront of literacy in Canada for more than 100 years and continues to be a leader, reaching out to people and responding to their learning needs at the so-called ‘frontiers,’ namely settlement organizations, mining camps, rural aboriginal areas, homeless shelters, prison centres, schools, and libraries.
In Grande Prairie, Frontier College has partnered with three local elementary schools to offer 1-to-1 literacy support to elementary school students. Each volunteer will be trained and placed with a student who requires reading, writing, and possibly homework help.
We'd love to have you on the team for a minimum of three months, but availability throughout the school year (Oct-June) is ideal. Volunteer recruitment occurs in September and January. Reference letters are available to volunteers who have been with us for at least 6 months.
Preference is for volunteers to be physically at the school with students, but an online tutoring option (via Zoom) is available.
We are looking for punctual, enthusiastic, and dedicated volunteers who are interested in making a positive difference in the lives of children and youth. Volunteers must be open and understanding of other cultures. Previous experience working with children and career pursuits in the field of education will be considered assets but are not required. If tutoring in person, volunteers must provide proof of full COVID-19 vaccination or an exemption from a medical professional.
Our applicant screening process involves an interview, two reference checks, and a police records check (Frontier College will cover the cost).
