Description

About United for Literacy:

United for Literacy (UFL), formerly Frontier College, is a national registered charity dedicated to improving the lives of children, youth, and adults through literacy. No other skill shapes the trajectory of a person’s life more than the ability to read and write. Our services are free for learners because we believe literacy is a human right. Supported by volunteers, we reach out to people wherever they are and respond to their learning needs. Our core philosophy of Student-Centered Individualized Learning means that we believe that learners should be active in deciding what and how they want to learn; a proven strategy to foster student engagement and positive attitudes towards learning. In Alberta, United for Literacy has supported literacy and learning since 1908. In addition to reading intervention for students, UFL Grande Prairie also delivers summer programs, distributes new books, and participates in community outreach events.

About Kickstand Grande Prairie (Operated by Sunrise House):

Kickstand Centres provide young people aged 11 to 25 years old with free, confidential and youth focused mental health, substance use, primary care, peer support, Indigenous wellness, and social services (including employment, recreation, and skill building programs) within a youth friendly one-stop-shop hub location.

Roles & Descriptions

About the opportunity:

We are currently looking for enthusiastic and dedicated volunteers who are interested in making a positive difference in the lives of local youth.

United for Literacy is partnering with Kickstand GP to recruit volunteers for a weekly drop-in homework club. Volunteers will provide tutoring to students in grades 8 -12 in a variety of subjects. The program will involve a one-hour time commitment, once a week (TBD).

Our applicant screening process involves: an application, an interview, two reference checks, and a police records check. Volunteers must be open and understanding of other cultures. Experience working with youth in an educational setting is an asset but not required.

Why volunteer with us:
Develop your interpersonal, communication, and program facilitation skills while helping to strengthen families and communities through literacy! Gain experience relevant for careers in the non-profit sector, education, social work, etc. Free training and professional development opportunities are available. Reference letters are provided to volunteers who have been with us for at least 6 months.

Interested in applying? Please complete a Volunteer Inquiry Form and we will reach out.
