Mission Statement: Every life is worth fighting for.

Vision Statement: STARS believes that where you live – or work, play and travel – shouldn’t impact your chance of survival.

“Our strategy focuses on three core groups that are integral to our fight to save lives: our patients, whom we call VIPs (Very Important Patients) and are the main focus of everything we do; our crew who range from the pilots and air medical crew that carry out each mission to our corporate teams that work to raise funds; and our allies who support our ability to be a global leader in critical patient care.”

STARS MissionFor almost 35 years, red STAR helicopters have taken flight across Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta and parts of British Columbia, fighting for the lives of critically ill and injured patients. According to their website, STARS carried out 2,878 missions in its 2018/19 fiscal year — an average of 8 flights per day! That’s more than 42,000 missions since the non-profit, charitable organization launched in 1985. The three bases in Alberta (Edmonton, Calgary and Grande Prairie) have flown 1,434 missions during the 2018/19 fiscal year, including missions to communities in B.C.

Canadian Cancer Society

Canadian Cancer Society Logo

Mission Statement:  The Canadian Cancer Society is a national, community-based organization of volunteers whose mission is the eradication of cancer and the enhancement of the quality of life of people living with cancer.

Canadian Cancer Society (CCS) is the only national charity that supports all people with all cancers in communities across the country.  Working as a national organization allows us to operate more efficiently and ensure donor dollars are spent effectively. And advancements benefit all Canadians, regardless of where they live.

CSS is a collective of people united by the same goals.  This includes people with cancer, their families, friends and healthcare teams, as well as donors, scientists, advocates, volunteers and partner organizations.

CCS knows that cancer can change a lot of things.  They know that for people with cancer and their families, life is more than a diagnosis.  That’s why CSS are always looking for ways to improve the cancer experience by helping people live longer and enhancing their quality of life.  CSS is here to help and support people live their lives more fully, because they believe that life is bigger than cancer.

You can help make a difference – our vision to create a world where no Canadian fears cancer is only achievable if we work collectively with people united by the same goals.

Become engaged in your community with the Canadian Cancer Society by visiting their online volunteer registration site, Volunteer Hub at or call the Cancer Information Service provided via a toll-free help line (1-888-939-3333) or for support.
