Q: What is the volunteer tutoring program all about?

Our volunteer tutoring program matches community volunteers with newcomers to Canada who struggle with language barriers. Tutors act as teachers, mentors, advocates and culture guides. We ask that tutors meet with their learners at least once per week for a one hour lesson. Tutors are responsible for all lesson planning and scheduling. The program offers a community connection for newcomers, and an opportunity for volunteers to learn about other cultures and help someone in need. Previous teaching experience is an asset, but not mandatory. Some training will be provided.

Q: How does this program benefit individuals and the community?

This program benefits the community by fostering an appreciation for diversity, raising awareness of the issues facing adult immigrants today and by creating a welcoming and more inclusive city.

Q: What role do volunteers play in the program and/or organization?

As a Non-Profit, volunteers are a crucial part of our service delivery. Due to long wait lists for classes, we rely on the in-kind time of volunteers to offer support and meet the service demand.

Q: What supports and/or benefits does your organization offer to volunteers?

We offer ongoing support for tutors and provide tutor training opportunities.

Q: How can volunteers get involved?

Just call (780) 539-6077! Volunteers are required to complete a police information check that is provided free of charge.

Q: What else can you tell me about the program and/or organization?

The Council for Lifelong Learning is a leader in providing literacy and adult learning programs and services as well as personal opportunities for all adults and families.
