CIA Karen

As the roar of the engines fade after a weekend full of racing volunteers of the North Peace Bracket Racing Association (NPBRA) prepare to tear down the track they set up days earlier at the Beaverlodge Airport. On hand for the tear down and most likely everything else that weekend is volunteer Karen Winterburn.

Karen started volunteering with the non-profit organization ten years ago as a way to spend more time with her Father who also volunteers with the group, though he now volunteers to spend more time with her as Karen’s dedication to the agency takes up most of her free time, according to friends. Karen has many roles with NPBRA she is the Administrator, Volunteer Coordinator, Fundraising & Sponsorship Director, Web Site Manager and helps in various other areas when needed. In her many roles Karen has managed to develop and organize a steady volunteer base. She fulfilled sponsorship goals for races, trophies and miscellaneous. She also fundraised to build a Café at the track, which only cost organization $12 to finish. Karen helps plan the year’s events and races including the organizations year end Windup Party and she helped at the Spring Spectacular Car Show. In the near future Karen’s plans for a growing NPBRA include building a playground, increasing membership and having the organization be more involved in the larger community by having groups participate events like the County of Grande Prairie Weed Warriors and cleanup programs. Karen is quick to point out the contributions of other volunteers who have helped her and the agency and consistently recognizes their efforts by nominating them for Tim Hortons Volunteers of the Week.  “Our volunteers, racers and members have become a close little community” says Karen, “We all love cars and racing.  Any volunteers that love them too will fit right in and make new friends, have lots of fun, and experience the thrill of riding down the track with one of our racers.”

The Grande Prairie Volunteer Services Bureau would like to thank Karen Winterburn for her work with North Peace Bracket Racing Association, helping our community and for being ‘Caught in the Act’ of volunteering.
