Shannon Carson nominated by Grande Prairie Council for Lifelong Learning

Caught in the Act - Shannon Carson

Shannon Carson the retired school teacher, who has spent time volunteering with the Volunteer Services Bureau in the past, likes to keep active. Her sunny disposition, positive attitude and her willingness to help anywhere she could was very much appreciated in her time with the GPVSB. So it was no surprise when she was nominated for the Red Rock Urban BBQ Caught in the Act by the Grande Prairie Council for Lifelong Learning (GPCLL).

With her teaching background and looking to fill her free time Shannon is a natural fit in the organization’s Volunteer Tutoring Program.  She meets with her Learner Joyce Nyarza once a week at the GPCLL office, located inside the Lions Learning Centre.  Shannon works to improve Joyce’s understanding of English in reading, writing and conversation. They also discuss current events and work on her math skills. The paring has been beneficial for both tutor and tutee, as Joyce learns skills to thrive as a newcomer to Canada, Shannon learns about Sudan culture and experience of a refugee in Canada and our city. Shannon is thankful for having such a dedicated student and new friendship saying she would never have met Joyce anywhere else in the community. Joyce has been inspired in her time spent with Shannon, she has learned the value of volunteering and now helps care for children in the community. Shannon and Joyce plan to continue working together to reach Joyce’s goal of attending college in hope of becoming a nurse. The GPCLL had the following to share about their exceptional volunteer “Shannon has been helping our pre-intermediate ESL leaner to improve her reading, writing, listening and speaking skills. Shannon plans lessons and meets weekly with the learner who needs this extra support to achieve her learning goals. We thank Shannon for her hard work and commitment.”  Shannon encourages anyone interested in volunteering absolutely should, she says “Volunteering is a great way to learn and meet new people, it’s also rewarding to know that your helping others and the community.”Shannon and Joyce
