In 2009 the John Howard Society of Grande Prairie launched the Tabono Centre. A centre which provides alternative, community based learning opportunities in a strength-based flexible environment, for youth ages 12-17. At the centre, youth are supported to define and achieve success. For various reasons, the youth who attend the Tabono program, are unable to access traditional systems of education. In combination with virtual learning this program promotes community involvement and self-expression through regular trips to community

Tyler Bojarski

Like many teenagers who find themselves with a day off school Tyler Bojarski was ready to settle into some comfy clothes, “sit on [his] butt and do nothing”. Luckily for Tyler, his Mother Sherri had other plans in mind. He explains:

My mom was trying to keep me busy so she called the Grande Prairie Volunteer Services Bureau to find out if there was any volunteer opportunities that I could do on my days off. They connected me to the MS Society and I went there and volunteered for 3 days.

Gail Schau

Volunteer with Grande Prairie  Live Theatre

Like many baby boomers today, Gail Schau is now retired. No longer chained to the 9-5 work week Gail has sought out meaningful activities to occupy her time. Her experience as a seamstress has led her into a voluntary position with the Grande Prairie Live Theatre (GPLT) that not only gives her an outlet to pass time but also makes her “feel of value.”
